Everything Keycrib can do, how to open and close it, and what every setting is set to from the start.
Get started
- Download Keycrib, open the disk image and drag Keycrib to Applications.
- Open Keycrib and allow Accessibility when macOS asks. Keycrib needs it to read other apps' menus and to notice when you hold Command. Nothing leaves your Mac.
- Go to any app and hold Command for about two seconds. The shortcuts of that app appear.
- Click a shortcut to run it, or start typing to search. Close with Esc or a click outside the sheet.
Nothing happens when you hold Command? Also allow Input Monitoring: Settings, General, then "Not responding? Also allow Input Monitoring". More in Troubleshooting below.
Open and close the sheet
You open Keycrib by holding Command alone. The default is about 2 seconds. You can change it from 0.5 to 7 seconds in Settings, General, where a small preview lets you feel the delay. Two settings change how it works:
- Chris mode is for those who prefer tapping: tap Command two, three or more times quickly instead of holding it. You choose how many taps and how long a pause is allowed between them (0.2 to 1 second, 0.4 by default).
- Close when I release Command closes the sheet as soon as you let go.
| Chris mode | Close when I release Command | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Off | On | Hold to open, let go to close |
| Off | Off | Hold to open, it stays open, tap once to close |
| On | Off | Tap two or three times to open, it stays open until you tap again |
| On | On | Tap and hold (two taps), tap, tap and hold (three taps), and so on. Let go to close. The last tap must be held for about 0.25 seconds, so a short last tap opens nothing |
- If you click in the sheet or type a search, it stays open when you let go of Command, so you can keep working. Tap Command, press Esc or click outside to close it.
- Press another key or click while you hold Command (for example Command C) and Keycrib stays out of the way.
- Keycrib does not open in apps you exclude, which is handy for games. Add them in Settings, Content.
- Hold Command while Keycrib itself is in front and you get a short guide instead. It is paused while you test the delay in Settings, General.

Using the sheet
- Tabs. The sheet has up to three tabs: macOS (shortcuts that work in every app), the app you are in (its menus) and App shortcuts (extra shortcuts for popular apps). Keycrib always opens on your app, never on macOS.
- Always accurate. Shortcuts are read live from the app's menus and grouped like the menus. Dimmed shortcuts are not available right now.
- Search. Type to search names and keys across all tabs. The number of matches shows on each tab.
- Click to run. Click a shortcut to run it in your app. This needs a license (the free trial includes it).
- Your keyboard. Shortcuts follow your keyboard layout, so they look and work right on Norwegian, German, French and other keyboards.
- Apps without menus. A few apps, such as some Electron apps and games, keep their commands outside the menus, so few shortcuts show. The App shortcuts tab covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Photoshop, Illustrator, VS Code, Slack, Figma, Chrome, Terminal, Finder, Notion and Obsidian. Some apps only fill their menus after you open them once.
The macOS tab
The macOS tab collects the shortcuts that work in every app, more than a hundred, in groups:
- Editing, and cursor and text (Copy, Paste, move by word or line, delete)
- Windows and apps (switch apps, close, hide, full screen)
- System (Spotlight, emoji, lock the screen, log out)
- Mission Control and Spaces, screenshots, and open and save dialogs
- Accessibility (VoiceOver, zoom, keyboard navigation)
- Function keys: what F1 to F12 do, and the fn / Globe key
- Trackpad: the gestures you have turned on
Click one to run it in your app. Shortcuts you can change in System Settings (screenshots, Spotlight, Mission Control and more) show your own keys, dimmed if you turned them off. Volume, brightness and playback keys work too. The power buttons and the gestures can only be shown. You can hide the tab with Include system shortcuts in Settings, Content. Share / Save turns the macOS sheet into a PDF as well.
Print, share and save as PDF
Share / Save at the bottom of the sheet turns what you see into a tidy landscape A4 PDF. Print it, share it or keep it. Long lists continue on more pages. This needs a license.
Settings
Open Settings from the gear at the bottom right of the sheet, from the menu bar icon, or by double-clicking Keycrib in Finder. This Help center opens from the same places: the menu bar icon, the gear in the sheet, and Settings (General and About).
- General: hold time with a live preview, Chris mode, close on release, menu bar icon, open at login, automatic updates and the access status.
- Appearance: light or dark, material and glass amount, text size and language.
- Content: system shortcuts (the macOS tab), unavailable shortcuts and excluded apps.
- License: enter your key, see your devices, manage them or deactivate this one.
- About: version, release notes and Check for updates.
It is safe to hide the menu bar icon. Settings is always one click away on the gear in the sheet, or double-click Keycrib in Finder.
License and free trial
- The 14-day free trial includes everything. Afterwards Keycrib runs in limited mode: you can still see shortcuts, but not click to run them or save, print and share PDFs, and the sheet shows an "Unregistered" watermark.
- A license is a one-time payment ($4.99) for all 1.x versions. You get a key by email. Paste it in Settings, License, and press Activate.
- One key works on up to 5 of your Macs. Activating needs internet. If you are offline, Keycrib gives you 14 more days until it can connect.
- Manage devices in Settings, License opens this website already signed in, so you never paste your key in a browser. You see your Macs as short codes (never names) and can free a seat. Lost a Mac? Do it from your new one.
- Deactivate this device frees the seat when you sell or give away a Mac.
- Teams of five or more can ask for a quote in the pricing section on the front page.
- Not happy? You get a full refund within 14 days, no questions asked.
Updates
Keycrib checks for a new version once a day (you can turn it off in Settings, General) and shows what is new. Press Download and install: Keycrib downloads the update, checks that it really comes from us, quits, updates itself and opens again.
Privacy
Keycrib never reads or stores what you type and has no analytics. It goes online only to activate and check your license, to register when the free trial started, and to look for updates.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I hold Command.
Open Settings, General and check that Accessibility access is on. If it still does not respond, also allow Input Monitoring. Check that the app is not in your excluded list, and remember that the default hold time is 2 seconds. If you updated or reinstalled Keycrib and it stopped working, remove Keycrib from the Accessibility list and add it again.
The sheet shows few or no shortcuts.
The app may keep its commands outside its menus. Try the App shortcuts tab, or open one of the app's menus once and try again.
The sheet closes, or stays open, when I do not expect it.
Compare Close when I release Command and Chris mode with the table under Open and close the sheet.
It says all licenses are in use.
Open Manage devices from Settings, License and free a seat.
It says the clock is wrong, or the license service cannot be reached.
Fix the date and time on your Mac, or connect to the internet, and try again.
The menu bar icon is gone.
You turned it off in Settings, General. Double-click Keycrib in Finder to open Settings and turn it on again.
